Paul Merson raved about reported Tottenham Hotspur target and West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone on Sky Sports News (2:56pm, February 20, 2021).

The former Arsenal star, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, has been impressed by the performances of Johnstone for West Brom this season.

The Englishman believes that if the Baggies get relegated to the Championship at the end of the season, then the 27-year-old would have no problem in finding a top club to move to.

The Sun reported in January 2021 that Spurs are looking at Johnstone as a potential replacement for Hugo Lloris in the summer of 2021.

The report in the British tabloid claimed that Tottenham are worried that former manager Mauricio Pochettino will try to sign Lloris for his current club Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season.

Merson said about Johnstone on Sky Sports News (2:56pm, February 20, 2021): “He is a good goalkeeper, another one who is doing himself massive favours. If West Brom get relegated, I wouldn’t be surprised if he got a top club. He has done everything right.”

Sam Johnstone to Tottenham Hotspur?

Lloris is still a very good goalkeeper, but the Frenchman has made some costly errors this season and is also in his 30s.

Spurs do need a younger goalkeeper who would be ready to make an immediate impact, and Johnstone does fit the profile.

The former Manchester United goalkeeper has been playing regular first-team football for quite a few years now, and he is ready to take the next step in his career.
