The Demon Slayer movie ‘Mugen Train’ continues to break records in Japan, but how can you watch the anime film in the US and around the world?
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is arguably one of the best and most popular anime series in the world right now, so it’s understandable that fans are desperate for new content.
Immediately following the finale of season 1 in September 2019, it was announced by writers of the series ‘Ufotable’ on Twitter that the next project would be a feature film.
The movie would be called ‘Mugen Train’ and would be a direct continuation from season 1, with Tanjiro, Inosuke, Zenitsu and Nezuko boarding the ‘Infinity Train’ after 40 people were reported missing on the locomotive.
However, fans want to know how they will be able to watch the Demon Slayer movie, including what date it will release outside Japan and which sites will be streaming the film.
The 74h biggest film of 2020…
The ‘Demon Slayer: Mugen Train’ anime movie released on Friday, October 16th in cinemas across Japan.
After a record-breaking opening weekend, the official Demon Slayer Twitter account revealed that Mugen Train made more than 10 billion yen ($95 million) in just 10 days.
The movie would then continue to break records for the best opening weekend and the best second weekend at the Japanese box office, selling more than 8 million tickets.
By January 2021, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train has grossed more than $390 million and is now considered to be the 4th highest-grossing movie of 2020.
The film’s success is also partially down to its release in IMAX cinemas across Japan. According to reports, the special IMAX version makes “use of the enhanced sound to give viewers the experience of being inside the battle when Tanjiro uses his Water Breathing techniques.”
Demon Slayer Mugen Train: English release date
- Demon Slayer: Mugen Train will release in selected theatres in “early 2021”, with both subbed and dubbed versions available across North America, Australia, New Zealand and Europe.
GSC Cinemas had originally planned for special fan screening to take place in late-January, followed by general screening starting on February 4th. However, a new release date for North American theatres has not been revealed since this original plan was postponed due to the pandemic.
Today, February 23rd, it has been revealed that the movie will premiere for one week in Miami, Florida as well as other designated cities. The film will release for just one week in order for Mugen Train to qualify for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film.
Across most of Europe, it’s a similarly frustrating wait for Mugen Train to release in cinemas.
The movie will premiere with Manga Entertainment (UK and Ireland), Selecta Vision (Spain), Dynit (Italy), Wakanim (Sweden, Denmark, France, Holland, Norway, Finland and Belgium) – but again, a specific release date remains unconfirmed in these territories.
However, the movie will release in German, Austrian and Swiss cinemas on March 25th thanks to Peppermint Anime.
Whilst in Australia and New Zealand, Madman Entertainment will premiere the movie starting February 25th.
In India, PVR Cinemas are reportedly in talks with distributors to bring Mugen Train to Indian theatres in 2021.
It is currently unknown whether a similar partnership will be made with theatres outside of these territories. However, considering the incredible success of so far, certain theatres are likely to ask for special permission to showcase Mugen Train.
Interestingly, there is a possibility that a licensing deal with IMAX (similar to that in Japan) could be made around the world – with 41 countries currently possessing official IMAX venues.
However, it is important to note that international releases entirely depend on the theatres being open, which remains uncertain considering the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
This article will be updated as soon as more information on Mugen Train’s international release is confirmed.
Will the Demon Slayer movie be streaming on Funimation or Crunchyroll?
At the time of writing, there is no information to suggest that the Demon Slayer movie will be releasing on Funimation, Crunchyroll or other streaming services.
However, fans are expecting that the movie will be made available on streaming platforms at some point following the theatrical release.
The most likely platform to showcase the movie first would be Funimation, with the North American theatrical release by Aniplex of America being produced in partnership with Funimation Films.
Although the anime series remains extremely popular on other streaming platforms such as Crunchyroll and Hulu, so the movie may become available on these sites a few months after the Funimation premiere.
This article will be updated as soon as more information is officially announced.
