Ashley Williams told Premier League Productions that he would like to see Joe Rodon get ‘more minutes’ at Tottenham.
The now-retired Wales international, who also works as a pundit for the BBC and Sky, shared that he speaks with Tottenham’s summer signing on the phone.
Rodon came through the ranks at Swansea, the club Williams thrived at for many years and he’s someone who he has seen rise from his teenage years.
Whilst Williams thinks he needs more game time, he did suggest that a reason behind his lack of action could be because Jose Mourinho isn’t willing to just throw him in.
“I think Joe Rodon, it will be nice to see him get more minutes, the more he can get them because it’s great for Wales,” said Williams. “He’s a kid I have known since he was probably 15 when I was at Swansea.
“I stayed close to him a lot because I liked him just in terms of how down to earth he was. Willing to learn. We speak on the phone. It will be nice for him to see more minutes. I know he has played a little bit which is great.
“But maybe it’s a bit soon for him in the Premier League? I think Mourinho might be keeping him back a little bit and not just throwing him out.
“I think in the future he can be a big player for Spurs. (His best attribute) is in possession. – He’s a tough lad and has a range of passing.”
It’s still early days for Rodon and he proved that during Tottenham’s defeat to Liverpool last month.
For large parts of that game, the Welshman was producing a top-quality performance and then poor decision-making cost him and Spurs a goal.
Rodon hasn’t played a Premier League game this month, but with the problems at the back for Mourinho, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him return against West Ham today.
