Michael Owen has said on Premier League Productions that the penalty that was awarded to Everton against Liverpool at Anfield was correct.

With around 10 minutes left in the Merseyside derby between Liverpool and Everton at Anfield on Saturday evening, the visiting team were awarded a spot kick.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin was adjudged to have been brought down inside the box by Trent Alexander-Arnold, and after a VAR check, a penalty was awarded.

Gylfi Sigurdsson made no mistake from the spot, as the Toffees won the Premier League game 2-0.

Former Liverpool striker Owen believes that the decision to award Everton the penalty was right.

Owen said on Premier League Productions: “I thought it was a penalty as well. I think you can see there Trent Alexander-Arnold hooks his leg up, he lifts it up and he almost hooks him down, and I thought it was a penalty as well.”

Big win for Everton

The win in the Merseyside derby on Saturday mans that Everton are now seventh in the Premier League table with 40 points from 24 matches.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side are level on points with defending champions Liverpool, who have played 25 games, and are only three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, who have also played 25 matches.

The Toffees are very much in the race for the Premier League top four, and the fans should be optimistic about their chances of playing in the Champions League next season.
