According to the Mirror, many Tottenham players thought Serge Aurier’s half-time row with Jose Mourinho against Liverpool would spell the end for him.
The report claims that Tottenham’s players felt there was no way back for the £23 million man after the confrontation on January 28th.
Aurier was substituted at half-time by Mourinho, before he reacted badly to his withdrawal.
The argument led to the 66-cap Ivory Coast international leaving the stadium at half-time, failing to watch his teammates play out the second half.
The Mirror say the argument was ‘so explosive’ and ‘so big’ that many Spurs players felt that was it for Aurier under the ex-Chelsea boss.
Interestingly, Mourinho reinstated the 28-year-old to his starting XI in the 2-0 win against West Brom on Sunday.
Aurier was dropped from the squad for the 1-0 defeat to Brighton, but that was as far as his punishment went as he started against Chelsea, and then against the Baggies.
One source told the Mirror that, by forgiving the Ivorian so quickly, we’ve seen how “desperate” Mourinho has become in his search for results.
This source has a point.
We’ve seen through Mourinho’s treatment of Dele Alli, and also Iker Casillas and Juan Mata at Real Madrid and Chelsea respectively, that he is more than capable of holding a lengthy grudge.
Luckily for Aurier, he seems to have been afforded a second chance.
