Reported Liverpool target Pedro ‘Pote’ Gonzalez said that he is not the finished article just yet, telling Record that he must take more care in possession.

While Wolverhampton Wanderers are facing a losing battle in their pursuit of a top ten Premier League finish, a talented attacking midfielder released by the Molineux outfit two years ago has Sporting Lisbon fans dreaming of glory.

Los Leones have not lifted the Portuguese title since 2002.

But a lengthy drought could come to an end sooner rather than later, thanks to the stellar form of the so-called ‘new Bruno Fernandes’.

Goncalves, better known as Pote, has produced a remarkable 14 goals in 16 league games in 2020/21; a tally made all the more impressive when you consider he is not even a forward.

According to Record, Pote’s match-winning displays have caught the eye of both Liverpool and Fernandes’s Manchester United. Sporting, however, are reluctant to sell their star man for a penny less than his £53 million release-clause.

And, in comments that will strike fear into the heart of defenders all over Iberia, Pote believes that he can get even better with a dash of hard work.

“I am not dissatisfied but I know that, in some games, I can do more. (I can) look for the ball more and not lose the ball so much,” said the 22-year-old, who made just one EFL Cup appearance during his time at Wolves.

The youngster has, bizarrely, come in for criticism at times during an extraordinary campaign. Yet Pote, whose moniker derives from the rather full frame that marked him out as a youngster, is used to proving people wrong.

“I was the fat guy who was waiting for the ball and then went running. I was fat, but ran more than the others. Fat was power, it gave me acceleration,” he added.

“Sometimes I am sad about what the critics write (on social media) but I can handle it.”
