Jamie Carragher has told Monday Night Football, which was broadcast on Sky Sports, that Everton have made an absolutely brilliant signing by bringing in Ben Godfrey.
Everton signed Godfrey from Norwich in the summer and have been quick to give the young defender plenty of opportunities in their first-team.
Godfrey has played in every position across Everton’s back-line already and his whole-hearted displays have earned him a lot of credit.
Carragher now thinks that Godfrey will eventually take a spot in Everton’s defence at centre-back alongside Michael Keane and he has been very impressed by the 23-year-old’s start at Goodison Park.
“He was a late signing, £20 million from Norwich and I think he was a brilliant signing,” Carragher said.
“His first game he came on as a sub in the Merseyside derby and he coped really well. Then he played against Southampton and he struggled, not necessarily because of himself. When you play with James Rodriguez he can leave you exposed.
“But then he found himself at left-back and he did really well and you know when you just look at someone at they just look the part. He moved gracefully and has a big set of shoulders on him.
“I think eventually he will play centre-back, I think him and Michael Keane are the best two.”
Norwich actually had the weakest defence in the Premier League last term, so Everton showed great faith in signing Godfrey.
But their trust has already been rewarded, with the England youth international really pushing to make it into the senior squad, given the quality of his displays.
Godfrey has helped Everton move to the verge of the top four, with optimism building that they could challenge for Europe this term.
