Serena Williams’ on-court Australian Open 2021 outfit was just as good as her on-court performance.
Yesterday, February 7th, Serena Williams took to the court to play against Laura Siegemund. The 39-year-old won her match, 6-1 6-1 in front a small crowd at Rod Laver Arena.
Last week, Serena withdrew from the Tarra Valley Classic semi-final due to a shoulder problem. However, her play was back on track yesterday.
Her sister Venus also played and won her match, as they both bid to win the Australian Open.
The play of both Venus sisters might have proved successful, but Serena Williams’ Australian Open outfit undeniably stole the show.
Serena Williams’ Australian Open 2021 outfit
After walking onto the court in a black jacket, Serena dropped it to reveal an impressive catsuit. Created by Nike, she later said the one-legged pink and red catsuit was inspired by American athletic legend Florence Griffith-Joyner aka Flo-Jo. Flo-Jo regularly sported asymmetric bodysuits during her career.
“I was inspired by Flo-Jo, who was a wonderful track athlete, amazing athlete when I was growing up,” she said. “Watching her fashion, just always changing, her outfits were always amazing.”
This isn’t the first time Serena’s worn daring outfits while playing either. In fact, in 2018 the French Open banned catsuits after Serena wore one. In response, she wore her iconic black tutu to play instead.
At last year’s Australian Open she wore a jade green jumpsuit with matching fishnet tights.
Fans love the Flo-Jo inspired catsuit
Many Tennis fans took to Twitter to applaud the 2021 Australian Open outfit. Among them was even Judy Murray, the mum of Andy Murray, who wrote: “Serena rocking the one-legged catsuit #girlpower.”
