Does the Sandcastle graphic novel ending have a twist? The latest M. Night Shyamalan film is inspired by it, attracting curiosity from fans.

Few filmmakers are arguably as divisive as M. Night Shyamalan.

The 50-year-old American filmmaker earned critical and audience acclaim with a string of earlier hits, including The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and Signs.

On the other hand, some fans suggest that 2004’s The Village marked a turning point, followed by a decline with such efforts as Lady in the Water, The Happening and The Last Airbender.

Some considered The Visit, Split and Glass as a return to form, so anticipation is already fairly high for his forthcoming project, Old.

This 2021 thriller film stars Gael García Bernal and the first teaser presents audiences with a tale of a family who begin to age rapidly while vacationing at a beach.

Sandcastle graphic novel ending: Is there a twist?

WARNING: SPOILERS

No, there is no twist at the end of Sandcastle. The characters are unable to escape the rapid aging process and this mysterious horror is not explained.

Speaking with CBR News, Frederik Peeters revealed that there was initially a twist, but they decided not to go in that direction:

“Originally, Pierre Oscar had written an ending, a resolution, a final twist, but we finally decided it was useless, and would have destroyed the frightening dimension of the book. So we had to find the only frontal and implacable way to replace the first ending.”

He was asked about why they chose not to have a character escape this twisted fate and explained:

“I… have to say that if someone in the book had escaped or survived, we would have been obliged to give an explanation to the mystery. Again, it’s not a thriller; it’s a fable.”

He also included in his response: “Because in real life, nobody will escape his impending doom. I guess that, as a European, due to the bloody history of my civilization, I have a high conscience of the tragic and grotesque dimension of human life. This, for instance, is a question nobody ever asked about the book in Europe.”

As highlighted by Collider, sources say that M. Night received Sandcastle as a Father’s Day gift and fell in love with the premise, encouraging him to purchase the rights to it. This, in turn, led to him working on the script for Old.

While there isn’t a shocking twist at the end of Sandcastle, it’s worth noting that it only serves as the inspiration for Old. So, there’s no reason to expect a totally faithful adaptation.

It’s likely that M. Night has conjured up his own ending for this strange tale, and hopefully his next great twist.
