While Britney Spears maintained a “girl next door” persona for many years, releasing hits such as Oops… I Did It Again, Hit Me Baby One More Time, Born To Make You Happy and Sometimes, Framing Britney Spears takes a look at the fact that she’s been living under a conservatorship for the last 13 years.

The documentary was released on February 5th 2021 as episode 6 of The New York Times Presents… series 1.

What is Framing Britney Spears about?

Framing Britney Spears documents the rise and fall of Britney and how she was treated by the press at different points in her career.

The documentary bio on IMDb states that is covers her current battle with her father, Jamie Spears, over her 13-year conservatorship: “People close to Britney Spears and lawyers tied to her conservatorship now reassess her career as she battles her father in court over who should control her life.”

In more recent years, the #FreeBritney hashtag has appeared on social media which sees fans of the singer support a movement to get her conservatorship ended.

In 2008, Britney’s conservatorship began and in November 2020, Britney requested to have her father removed as conservator, however, the court rejected her attempt.

Framing Britney takes a look at how the singer has been covered in the media over the years, as well as her current legal battles, struggles with custody over her two sons, and clears up the rumours surrounding her 2007 “breakdown” as it was deemed by the press.

Nancy Carson, Felicia Culotta, Kim Kaiman, Daniel Ramos, Adam Streisand, Kevin Tancharoen, and Justin Timberlake are all listed as appearing in the episode. However, the likes of JT aren’t actually interviewed for the documentary but are featured in archived footage.

As outlined in the Framing Britney episode, Britney herself was requested to take part in the documentary, however, the production team don’t know whether she received the requests. Her mother, father and sister “didn’t respond” or “declined requests” to partake in Framing Britney.
