Ben Davies has earned a rave review from former Preston North End owner Peter Ridsdale.

Davies was a shock arrival at Anfield on deadline day, having been widely expected to join Celtic.

Manager Jurgen Klopp targeted the 25-year old amid a defensive crisis that has in recent days seen Joel Matip join Virgil van Dijk in being ruled out for the rest of the season.

He’s looked on as the defender made 145 appearances for the Championship club, and has told Liverpool supporters they can expect a player of real quality.

Speaking on talkSPORT, he also confirmed that Celtic were indeed expecting to sign the player, who LFC Globe report will earn £60,000 per week at Anfield.

He told Jim White: “We’re very happy with the deal, given the alternative was that he was going to go to Celtic for nothing, and we do have an investment in his future because there is a sell-on clause, so we’re very happy with the deal we’ve done with Liverpool.

“Certainly from the young man’s point of view, he’s been outstanding for us, and to have a chance to play for a club like Liverpool is brilliant.”

Asked what Liverpool would be getting in Davies, Ridsdale replied: “He’s an outstanding young man. He’s down to earth, very professional.

“At our level he looked like a Rolls Royce. When he was with the academy I used to go and watch him play and he stood out, and was by far the best player there.

“He then went out on loan to York, Newport County and Fleetwood, so he’s got a lot of games under his belt at adult football before he’s been playing for us.

“He deserves this chance. He’s a very good player.”
