According to RMC Sport (10:59pm), Marseille defender Duje Caleta-Car was ready to board a private jet to sign for Liverpool – but the move seemingly won’t happen.

The Reds are in the market for a new centre back, with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Fabinho remarkably all out injured.

Preston defender Ben Davies is now set for a shock move to Anfield, but Liverpool seemingly had another target in mind too.

It’s stated that Marseille ace Caleta-Car was at the local airport with his parner ready to fly to Manchester, then go on to Liverpool by car to finalise a move to Anfield.

Negotiations were allegedly ‘very advanced’, but Marseille scrapped the deal at the last minute because they didn’t think they could find a replacement.

It’s unclear whether Liverpool can resurrect the deal given how little time is left, but Caleta-Car is surely gutted as things stand.

Formerly of Red Bull Salzburg – just like Naby Keita, Sadio Mane and Takumi Minamino – Caleta-Car is strong and impressive on the ball, whilst he has plenty of potential at just 24.

Marseille’s financial issues mean a deal was surely appealing, but instead of a dream move to Anfield, the Croatian is now seemingly facing seeing out the season in France.
