Celtic endured another disappointing afternoon as Jim Goodwin’s men triumphed in Glasgow

Celtic’s players are psychologically “in the bin”.

That’s the verdict of former Hearts midfielder Michael Stewart, who watched as Scotland’s champions lose 2-1 to St Mirren at Celtic Park.

The result means Neil Lennon’s men remain 23 points behind Rangers at the top of the Premiership.

It was yet another low in a season that was supposed to end with a 10-in-a-row coronation, and Stewart has delivered a brutal verdict on the current mentality of Celtic’s players.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound, he said: “For Celtic this season is just whimpering to a sorry end.

“Tactically St Mirren and Jim Goodwin bossed it, they were able to impose their game on Celtic rather than the other way round.

“And I think we have got to the stage now where we can’t expect anything else from Celtic.

“They are psychologically done, they are in the bin.

“They haven’t got anything else to give.

“And the only way that is going to change is with a new season, which obviously isn’t going to happen until this one finishes. Or there’s changes.

“There is no drive, no determination in the team. As soon as one little thing goes against them, they fall apart.

“And they don’t have the same pace to cut teams apart.

“They have gone through so many shapes and formations that they don’t have anything really dialled in.

“Teams are able to stop Celtic so easily now and that is a real concern. Even with that squad as is, Celtic should be able to go and challenge right at the top of the table and they are so far off it.”

The result means Celtic won just one of their six fixtures in January, drawing four times after the New Year loss against Rangers at Ibrox.

Lennon’s men have a chance to at least temporarily reduce the gap to 20 points on Tuesday night when they take on Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.
