Robert Dempster Pretty was born on 7 September 1930. Edith Pretty (née Dempster) was 47 years old when she gave birth to her only son.
Robert’s father was Frank Pretty, a major in the Territorial Army’s Suffolk Regiment during World War I. Frank was also involved in his family business of clothing manufacture.
What happened to Robert Pretty after Edith’s death?
The Dig concludes on a sombre note with Edith contemplating her failing health, the looming Second World War, and the fate of her son Robert. Edith Pretty died on 17 December 1942 after suffering from a stroke.
After the death of his mother, Robert Pretty was raised by his aunt, Elizabeth. Robert moved to live with Elizabeth in Hampshire and never returned to Tranmer House.
However, if you are to visit Tranmer House in Sutton Hoo, you may see Robert Pretty’s portrait hanging there. Edith Pretty commissioned Dutch artist Cor Visser to paint a portrait of herself and Robert.
