How does Monica Rambeau get her powers? WandaVision has audiences curious, so let’s get the character’s history explored.
Once again, audiences have been invited back to Westview courtesy of WandaVision on Disney+.
The series arrived on Friday, January 15th 2021, centring on Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) – better known as Scarlet Witch – and Vision (Paul Bettany).
A mystery was established immediately, as, within the MCU timeline, WandaVision takes place after the events of Avengers: Endgame.
In the wake of episode 4 – titled ‘We Interrupt This Program’ – curiosity has fallen on Monica Rambeau, played by Teyonah Parris. She was introduced to us as Geraldine, Wanda and Vision’s neighbour. However, Geraldine gave Wanda a dose of reality and she was cast out of Westview at the end of episode 3, met by SWORD agents.
Since episode 4 aired, some are asking a pressing question: How does Monica Rambeau get her powers?
How does Monica Rambeau get her powers?
- In the comics, Monica gained superpowers after being hit with extra-dimensional energy, created by an energy disruptor weapon that was made by a criminal scientist.
This is noted by Marvel Fandom, which includes that she was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. She was actually the second incarnation of Captain Marvel, dating back before Carol Danvers, and looking back, she even led the Avengers.
While leading the iconic team of suits, she worked with Wanda and Vision, so the characters have a history on the page.
On the other hand, there are some theories as to how she may gain superpowers in WandaVision, or rather, the wider MCU.
As highlighted by Den of Geek, there is a theory which suggests that SWORD are monitoring those who have had their powers awakened by a zap from an infinity stone. Wanda’s powers were activated by the Mind Stone and Carol’s were as a result of the Space Stone. It’s believed that Monica could have powers from her connection to Carol.
You may remember that she appeared in Captain Marvel and was the daughter of Carol’s best friend; Captain Marvel took place 25 years before WandaVision.
Also, acknowledging the powers that the character does have and pulling from the comics, she can transform herself into electromagnetic energy, which she can utilise in a number of different ways. So, she could prove quite the asset to the MCU as it progresses.
Kevin Feige on Teyonah Parris and Monica Rambeau
Speaking with The Wrap, Marvel Studios’ chief – Kevin Feige – spoke of Monica and Teyonah’s role in the MCU: “We always knew that Monica would have a future within the MCU. The ability to further meet her as Teyonah Parris in this series, before the movie, was this organic shift.”
Addressing her importance in WandaVision, he added:
“The notion of Monica Rambeau in this series was very natural; needing a particular type of role and a particular type of storytelling device, that at Marvel can become more than that if we make it a character that we know we have stories for. That unlocked a whole new aspect of the show.”
Teyonah is set to reprise the character in Captain Marvel 2 and we will likely see significant development regarding her potential powers and so forth as WandaVision continues.
