Audiences are curious about The Dig filming locations, so where was the Netflix movie starring Ralph Fiennes and Carey Mulligan filmed?
Earlier in January 2021, Netflix announced that subscribers can expect a new movie every single week for the whole year.
Already, audiences have been invited to check out Pieces of a Woman, Outside the Wire and The White Tiger, while there are still plenty of anticipated titles to look forward to. These vary from exciting acquisitions to original productions.
One of the latest added to the streaming service is The Dig, made available from Friday, January 29th 2021.
Directed by Simon Stone (he previously helmed The Daughter), this drama film is based on John Preston’s 2007 novel of the same name and depicts the events of the 1939 excavation of Sutton Hoo.
Carey Mulligan, Ralph Fiennes, Lily James, Johnny Flynn, Ben Chaplin and more star, but where was The Dig filmed? Let’s talk about filming locations…
The Dig filming locations
- The Dig was filmed in Shackleford, Surrey and Suffolk.
Back in September 2019, the East Anglian Daily Times noted that the crew were filming in Suffolk, and more specifically, they were shooting in Shingle Street near Hollesley.
It’s believed that the film could encourage future productions to be filmed in East Anglia, and more filming locations used for The Dig include Snape, Iken, Butley and Rendlesham Forest. Adding to its authenticity, it’s also worth noting that it was filmed close to the actual excavation site.
Unfortunately, some scenes shot in Norfolk didn’t make it into the final film…
Where was The Dig filmed? Simon Stone on deleted scenes
As highlighted by the Eastern Daily Press, Peggy’s (Lily James) honeymoon scenes were filmed with Ben Chaplin in Norfolk on Cromer Beach.
However, he explains that the scenes shot there didn’t make it into the film:
“The Cromer scenes are some of the most beautiful in the film and I’m incredibly proud of them. It’s an astonishing thing that sometimes you have to get rid of some of the best scenes, because you have to slim down the narrative and keep the momentum going forward. Unfortunately one of the ways to do that was to have the refreshing surprise of Lily James and Ben Chaplin’s characters turn up half way through the film rather than be present from the very beginning.”
He added: “… that meant that their entire – as scripted – honeymoon, disappeared from the film. It’s a real shame because I had so much fun being there.”
Nevertheless, he feels the scenes will be made available down the line: “I’m sure at some point when the deleted scenes are revealed to the world you’ll see what I mean.”
