In the space of one match, Alfredo Morelos served up a reminder of why he’s so important to Rangers and why he’s also the club’s most controversial player.

It was the Colombian’s goal after 51 minutes that made the difference as Rangers beat Hibs 1-0 at Easter Road on Wednesday night, but there were some who felt he shouldn’t have been on the pitch to convert Joe Aribo’s assist.

The 24-year-old, valued at £10.8m by Transfermarkt, brought his boot down on Hibs defender Ryan Porteous in the first half, but received no punishment from referee Kevin Clancy.

He had escaped with just a yellow after striking Dundee United defender Mark Connolly with his forearm in December, but the incident was later upgraded to ‘violent conduct’ and the striker was subsequently suspended for two matches.

This latest incident has left Rangers legend Ally McCoist struggling for words.

Asked by host Alan Brazil on talkSPORT to sum up Morelos, McCoist replied: “I’ve got no idea, I’ve got absolutely no idea, I would love to give you an answer, I can’t, I can’t mate.

“How frustrating, how frustrating? I don’t know, I just don’t know.

“He just doesn’t learn.

“He took his goal well right enough.”

Another former Rangers goalscorer was in agreement, with Kris Boyd telling Sky Sports viewers on Wednesday night: “It’s a red card, there’s no getting away from it.

“I just don’t understand, it was the exact same at Tannadice. He’s got away with one.

“Kevin Clancy’s got a good, great view of it there. I just don’t understand why he needs to do it. I just can’t work it out.

“People could tell me that he’s trying to get out the road of him. He’s not, you can see it right there.

“He is very lucky to still be on this pitch.”
