According to The Athletic, Leeds United director of football Victor Orta has always liked Emiliano Buendia, even before Marcelo Bielsa was appointed as the club’s head coach in the summer of 2018.

The report has added that Leeds did not make any move to sign Buendia in the 2017-18 season.

Orta was appointed the Whites’ director of football in May 2017, while the Argentine attacking midfielder joined Norwich in the summer of 2018 after spending the 2017-18 campaign on loan at Cultural y Deportiva Leonesa from Getafe.

The Independent reported in August 2020 that Leeds were interested in signing the 24-year-old in the summer of 2020.

Summer transfer?

It is hard to see Norwich sell Buendia in the final days of the January transfer window.

The Canaries are challenging for automatic promotion back to the Premier League, and there is simply not enough time for the club to get in a suitable replacement.

Perhaps Leeds could try for the 24-year-old in the summer of 2021. True, Rodrigo can play in the number 10 role, but Pablo Hernandez is not getting any younger, and a player of Buendia’s quality who has played in the Premier League would make the Whites better.

According to WhoScored, Buendia has scored seven goals and provided six assists in 21 Championship matches for Norwich so far this season.
