Darren Bent suggested on talkSPORT (8:45pm, January 24, 2021) that Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke would be a good signing for Aston Villa.

The former Villa striker believes that Benteke would be a good back-up to first-choice striker Ollie Watkins at Villa Park.

The 30-year-old Belgium international was on the books of Villa from 2012 until 2015 before he moved to Liverpool.

Benteke switched to Palace from the Reds in 2016 for a transfer fee reported by The Guardian to be worth £27 million.

According to Sky Sports, West Bromwich Albion are interested in signing Benteke from Premier League rivals Palace in the January transfer window.

Bent said about Benteke on talkSPORT (8:45pm, January 24, 2021): “If he was to stay in this country, maybe go back up to Villa, be back-up to Ollie Watkins. We know Ollie Watkins is their first choice, but listen, Villa fans absolutely love him.”

Back to Aston Villa?

Watkins is the first-choice striker at Villa, and that is not going to change this season.

Benteke did well during his spell at Villa Park, scoring 49 goals in 101 games for the Villans, according to BBC Sport.

However, the Belgian has struggled to play well and to play regularly for Palace in recent times, and he may not be able to offer much to Dean Smith’s side.

According to WhoScored, Benteke has scored three goals in 617 minutes in the Premier League so far this season, and scored two goals and gave one assist in 13 league starts for Palace in 2019-20.
