Chris Sutton has told a Celtic fan on BBC 606 that Brendan Rodgers didn’t leave Celtic because they failed to sign the now thriving Aston Villa star John McGinn.

A Celtic fan rang up 606 stating that their rot started all the way back in 2018 when they failed to secure the services of McGinn, who was a well-documented target for the Glasgow giants.

McGinn ended up making the switch down south to the Midlands and signing for then-Championship Aston Villa, who are now sitting in the top-eight of the Premier League table.

Sutton doesn’t think Rodgers leaving was down to the failure of securing McGinn’s services, but the Celtic fan felt their current downfall started two years ago.

“Can I just stop you there, you think that’s the reason Brendan left?” asked Sutton.

The Celtic fan responded by saying: “That was the root of it, yes. I think that was the beginning of it. Almost a perfect understudy to Scott Brown.”

Sutton then added: “I think Celtic got that wrong. But I am not so sure that was the entire reason why Brendan did leave, though.”

Celtic fans must now look on in anguish as McGinn is one of the most underrated players in England’s top-flight.

Whilst Jack Grealish is Villa star’s man, it could be argued that McGinn is next on the list in terms of quality and talent.

The only joy Celtic fans can now get from McGinn is his bustling runs from midfield when he is donning the Scotland shirt and he will be pivotal for his country at this summer’s delayed European Championships.
