Paul Merson told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports (23/01/21 at 2:10 pm) that Liverpool’s Premier League showdown with Tottenham on Thursday is a ‘cup final’ and he doesn’t worry about their recent league form.

The outspoken TV pundit made his comments before Liverpool’s FA Cup exit on Sunday, but he was pretty clear that the Tottenham game is the priority and warned that they still have the capabilities of winning ten games on the bounce.

Liverpool are sitting fourth in the Premier League table and they can lose that top-four spot if they are beaten by Jose Mourinho’s men.

Nonetheless, this is what Merson had to say about Liverpool’s clash at Tottenham prior to their FA Cup defeat.

“They are six points behind, don’t worry, they are going to be there,” said Merson. “I hope he hasn’t rested them players [Salah and Firmino] for the Manchester United game. Your cup final is at Tottenham. You have to beat Tottenham.

“If they don’t beat Tottenham then they have Man City next, which if they won that great if they don’t win it then it’s a draw.

“They have gone five games without winning. Man United and Man City have won all five. It’s a double whammy there.

“If they beat Tottenham then the last five games are forgotten and the confidence is back. If they don’t then it carries on. I just think it’s a cup final against Tottenham. Liverpool can win ten games on the trot, we have seen it enough times, but the Spurs game is a massive game.”

When Liverpool last met Spurs, Roberto Firmino netted a stoppage-time winner and words were said between both Mourinho and Klopp after the match.

Whilst Mourinho will be concentrating on Tottenham’s FA Cup clash with Championship side Wycombe today, he will no doubt prepare his side to be nasty to play against in a few days time and remind that about what happened before.

It will certainly result in added drama if Liverpool are beaten on Thursday because the Premier League champions will then have to look over their shoulders in regards to worrying about their Champions League place.
