According to a report published in The Athletic this morning, Liverpool have made contact with Sokratis Papastathopoulos.
Sokratis is a free agent at the moment, having recently been released by Arsenal.
The report has claimed that towards the end of last week, Liverpool made contact with the Greece international central defender.
However, the conversation reportedly did not progress beyond checking on the situation of Sokratis, who worked with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund.
Need for a centre-back
Liverpool have injury problems defensively, and the defending Premier League champions could do with a new centre-back for the short term.
Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are long-term injury concerns, while Joel Matip has also been missing at times this season.
Fabinho, a defensive midfielder by trade, is now a regular at centre-back, where even midfielder Jordan Henderson has played on occasions.
Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips are very young and inexperienced defenders, and Liverpool could do with an experienced centre-back for the next few months.
Sokratis would be a good signing until the end of the season, but it seems that he may not move to Liverpool after all.
