When Arsenal paid £25m for Kieran Tierney in September 2019, there were some who worried about the defender’s ability to make the step up from Scottish football.

Tierney had been hugely impressive in his time at Celtic, but a succession of injuries meant it was some time before fans of Mikel Arteta’s side saw what the left-back was capable of.

Since the Premier League returned in June, however, Tierney has become a key player and thoroughly won over the fans.

Tierney was named Arsenal’s Player of the Month for June, and his performances have attracted plaudits from the likes of Gary Lineker, Chris Sutton and club legend David Seaman.

Sky Sports News host Jim White believes Tierney can go on to become “iconic” at the Emirates.

Speaking in the Sunday Post, the Deadline Day presenter said: “People are now praising The Gunners for getting Tierney for £25m. Everybody thinks it is an absolute bargain!

“They are incredulous at Arsenal getting him for that kind of fee.

“He has really impressed lots of people with his attitude, work ethic and ability. He gives everything in every game, and I’m told he is the same every day in training.

“The Arsenal fans are aware of all that, and that’s why they have really taken to him. He is so down-to-earth, and they like that.

“You know, I don’t think he is too far away from having iconic status at The Emirates. That’s how highly the supporters think of him as a person and a player.”

Tierney has made a total of 47 appearances since joining the club.
