Paul Merson has written on Sky Sports that Divock Origi is not going to win Liverpool the Premier League title.

The former Arsenal star, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, believes that Origi is not good enough to start ahead of Mohamed Salah or Roberto Firmino for Liverpool.

Merson made the comments in the wake of the Reds’ defeat to Burnley at Anfield in the Premier League on Thursday evening.

The Englishman believes that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp got his team selection wrong by including the Belgian in his starting lineup.

Merson wrote on Sky Sports: “Divock Origi isn’t going to win Liverpool leagues, no disrespect. If he was better than Mohamed Salah or Roberto Firmino, he’d be playing every week. If he scores that chance in the first half, then the game would have been over.”

Squad player

Origi started against Burnley and was unlucky when his effort came back off the frame of the goal.

The Belgium international striker – who cost Liverpool £10 million in transfer fees when they signed him from Lille in the summer of 2014, as reported by BBC Sport – is essentially a squad player at the Reds.

True, Origi is not better than Salah or Firmino, but it is not easy for any footballer to make an immediate impact if he has not been playing regularly.

According to WhoScored, the 25-year-old has made one start and four substitute appearances in the Premier League and has made three appearances in the Champions League for Liverpool so far this season.
