Sabrina Carpenter just released her new song Skin, and it addresses the drama with Olivia Rodrigo. Let’s explore the lyrics…

Last week, Olivia Rodrigo dropped her new track Drivers License and it caused quite a stir on social media. Fans were convinced the song was about Olivia’s failed relationship with Joshua Bassett who allegedly moved on with Sabrina Carpenter.

Olivia never actually confirmed whether this was true, but fans were sure that the lyrics were proof that Sabrina and Joshua are dating.

Now, just as everyone thought all the drama had died down, Sabrina has dropped her own track called Skin, and if you listen to the lyrics carefully, it addresses all of the Olivia Rodrigo drama.

Sabrina Carpenter addresses Olivia Rodrigo drama in ‘Skin’

On Thursday, Sabrina Carpenter released her new track Skin, an emotional song that is a direct response to Olivia Rodrigo’s Drivers License. Let’s go through the lyrics and explore the links to Olivia Rodrigo…

The first verse of the song links to Drivers License directly, responding to the lyric where Olivia Rodrigo said “and you’re probably with that blonde girl” that many fans were convinced was Sabrina.

“Maybe we could have been friends
If I met you in another life
Maybe then we could pretend
There’s no gravity in the words we write
Maybe you didn’t mean it
Maybe ‘blonde’ was the only rhyme
The only rhyme”

Then, she talks about how her heart is breaking before saying “you’ve been telling your side so I’ll be telling mine”. Olivia certainly did tell her side of the story and Drivers License went viral across the world.

“For my heart to be breaking, breaking, no
I’m happy and you hate it, hate it, oh
And I’m not asking you to let it go
But you’ve been telling your side
So I’ll be telling mine
Oh oh oh oh”

The next verse is where it really gets interesting. She talks about how Olivia “can’t get under her skin” before saying “while he’s on mine”. But who is “he”? Did Sabrina just confirm that she’s dating Joshua Bassett?

“You can try
To get under my, under my, under my skin
While he’s on mine
Yeah all on my, all on my, all on my skin
I wish you knеw
That even you
Can’t get under my skin
If I don’t let you in”

Then, Sabrina essentially calls out Olivia for only telling the story from her point of view, implying that that might not actually be the real truth. “Some people will believe it, and others will read in between the lines,” she says. So what is the real truth? Did Joshua leave Olivia for Sabrina?

“You’re telling it how you see it
Like truth is whatever you decide
Some people will believe it
And some will read in between the lines
You’re putting me in the spotlight
But I’ve been under it all my life
All my life”

The chorus then repeats a few times before Sabrina sings a final verse reflecting on everything that’s happened. She says she hopes that one day they can be friends again and laugh about it, seeming hopeful for the future when all the drama has passed.

“I just hope that one day
We both can laugh about it
When it’s not in our face
Won’t have to dance around it
Don’t drive yourself insane
It won’t always be this way”
