Rio Ferdinand has told BT Sport, during their live coverage, that he does believe that Everton are Premier League title contenders this season.

Everton have made a seriously promising start to the campaign and currently sit in sixth place.

The Toffees, crucially, have games in hand on those around them though.

If Everton are able to win their spare matches they could climb into the top four.

And Ferdinand thinks that Everton are genuine title contenders because Carlo Ancelotti is at the helm.

“Look at the league, I think down to Everton – they’re in there,” he said, when asked how many teams can win the Premier League.

“You can’t discount Everton to play a part in this because of the manager, Carlo Ancelotti.

“He knows what it takes to win a league and has a very good team there.

“The squad depth probably isn’t what he’d like, but I think down to Everton you have to look at.”

Everton’s next league match should be a fierce test of their title credentials.

Ancelotti’s side are due to face Leicester City at Goodison Park next Wednesday, in what looks a huge match for both sides.

If Everton can beat Leicester, who are currently in second place, then belief will really start to build on Merseyside that this could be a special season for the Blues.

However, a defeat would really give Everton some ground to make up in the battle to catch the league leaders.
