Everton are keen to sign Lille defender Zeki Celik but the Turkey international would prefer to join Roma than move to the Premier League, according to TRT Sports.
Everton’s interest makes it look as though those two impressive years on loan at Schalke counted for little in the end.
Jonjoe Kenny returned to Goodison Park last summer with the aim of establishing himself as a regular starter at his home town club.
But despite making a name for himself in Germany, Carlo Ancelotti remains unconvinced by the Liverpool-born England U21 international.
Kenny has played just 77 minutes of Premier League football this season and, as Burnley look to offer the 23-year-old a fresh start at Turf Moor (Lancs Live), it seems Everton have a replacement in mind.
But when it comes to Celik, the phrase ‘barking up the wrong tree’ springs to mind.
Two weeks after Turkish Football claimed Everton had submitted an offer for Celik, new reports suggest the £13 million-rated right-back has little interest in swapping the Ligue 1 title challengers for the blue half of Merseyside.
Celik would prefer to join Roma in Italy.
It seems the admiration is mutual too, given the Giallorossi have been trying to sign the attack-minded 23-year-old since last year.
That doesn’t mean Kenny will be offered a chance to finally make his mark at Everton, however. It’s just Celik won’t be the man to replace him.
