Paul Merson told Soccer Special on Sky Sports (19/01/21 at 10:10 pm) that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola couldn’t do the job Brendan Rodgers has done at Leicester City.
Prior to being dethroned by Manchester United on Wednesday night, the Foxes moved to the top of the Premier League table on Tuesday, but they are now third – four points ahead of Liverpool and level on points with third-placed Man City.
Ever since Liverpool sacked Rodgers in 2015, he has reacted to that pretty well because he had huge success at Celtic and now he’s showing his worth at the King Power.
Nonetheless, Merson hailed the Northern Irishman as a ‘special’ manager after his side beat Chelsea on Tuesday.
“I cannot talk highly enough of him,” said Merson. “I just think he’s a special manager. He’s one of the best in the business.
“We are talking about Pep Guardiola and Klopp. I think he’s up there with them. I really do.
“I don’t personally see Klopp and Pep Guardiola being able to do what Brendan Rodgers has done at Leicester. I don’t see how they could do what he’s done.”
Whilst all the talk is about the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City or even big-spending Chelsea struggling.
Rodgers is slowing going about his business at Leicester and it could be argued that he is perhaps one of the best pound-for-pound managers in the game.
There’s no doubt that Leicester are title challengers, but the lack of spotlight on them could make them that more dangerous.
