Reported West Ham United target Pau Lopez continues to come under fire at Roma, with ex-Giallorossi goalkeeper Franco Superchi telling TMW that the Spain international ‘cannot be trusted’.

With Roma coach Paulo Fonseca already under pressure after Friday’s 3-0 battering at the hands of bitter rivals Lazio, the last thing he needed was to bow out of the Coppa Italia in humiliating fashion just 96 hours later.

But that is exactly what happened as Roma were beaten 4-2 on own their hallowed Stadio Olimpico turf by a Spezia side who probably couldn’t believe their luck.

With the scores level heading into extra-time and Roma already down to ten men following Gianluca Mancini’s dismissal, Pau Lopez raced from his goal and clattered into Roberto Piccolo, studs planted straight into the Spezia forward’s chest.

Another red card was the inevitable result.

Half an hour later, a nine-man Roma side had conceded twice more, mourning another miserable defeat with the much-maligned Lopez an inevitable scapegoat.

“They sold Alisson, the best in the world and then paid a lot for Pau Lopez,” said Superchi of the former Espanyol ‘keeper, whose time in the Italian capital has been littered with high-profile errors.

“He seemed to have recovered (his form) and then it went very badly. He cannot be trusted. We need a good one (goalkeeper), simply.”

It is safe to say Superchi would not be too disappointed if Lopez, who had a brief and uneventful spell at Tottenham in 2016/17, was to return to London in the near future.

ForzaRoma reported last week that West Ham made a loan-to-buy bid for the £20 million glovesman.

But Hammers be warned; this was not the first blunder of Lopez’s Roma career.
