Episode 1 of Fox’s 9-1-1 season 4 paid tribute to crew member John Kemmler but just who is he and how was he involved in the series?

After a delayed start thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic, season 4 of 9-1-1 arrived on Fox on January 18th.

The season opener was filled to the brim with tension as the dam holding back the Hollywood reservoir is on the verge of collapsing, leaving the fate of Athena hanging in the balance.

As the credits rolled on episode 1, however, fans were greeted by a touching tribute to John Kemmler but just who is he and what was his role in making 9-1-1?

Episode 1 pays tribute to John Kemmler

Just before the credits rolled on season 4, episode 1, 9-1-1 takes a moment to pay tribute to John Kemmler.

The tribute, accompanied by a photo, simply read:

“In Loving Memory of John Kemmler, 1958 – 2020”


Who is John Kemmler?

  • John Kemmler was a crew member involved in the making of 9-1-1.

Specifically, John was a transportation driver for the series, delivering equipment so that production on the Fox series could run like clockwork.

Kemmler was a long-time resident of Long Beach in Los Angeles. He and his family moved to Belmont Heights in 2009 and were highly active members of the community.

As well as his work on TV shows such as 9-1-1, John was also an assistant scoutmaster and for five years helped run Scout Troop 14, heavily benefitting those in their local area.

John Kemmler passed away on August 22nd, 2020 after contracting Covid-19.

He leaves behind wife Maria and their three children.

After he was admitted into the hospital, John Kemmler’s family set up a fundraiser in order to help cover their medical bills and as of January 19th, the campaign has raised over $45,000.


9-1-1 star pays tribute

Following John passing, 9-1-1 star Oliver Stark, who plays Evan “Buck” Buckley in the series, paid tribute to the much-loved crew member.

In a tribute posted to Twitter, Oliver wrote: “John was one of the sweetest and kindest people I have ever met. Someone who went above and beyond to be cheerful and make a difference.”

9-1-1 sesaon 4 began airing on Fox on January 18th, 2021.
