Every now and then, Italian transfer site Calciomercato post a new rumour that doesn’t really provide much information outside of clubs being interested in a player.
This time, it’s Inter Milan’s Nicolo Barella at the centre of one of these rumours, as Calciomercato claim that Tottenham and Liverpool both want him.
His deal only expires in 2024, and given that Inter paid €40.5million (£36million) to sign him from Cagliari, they would surely expect a healthy profit.
In light of the global pandemic, it’s hard to see either of the Premier League sides coughing up big money, but let’s play along for a second.
Barella has now notched six goals and 16 assists in 66 games for Inter, having scored against rivals Juventus on Sunday evening.
At 23, Barella looks to have a huge future ahead of him, and he has proven that he is one of the top young midfielders in Europe since joining Inter in 2019.
Barella is technically gifted and provides real guile going forward, something that Liverpool paid Thiago to provide, so it’s hard to see Barella heading there.
Offering a more progressive option alongside Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg at Tottenham could make some sense, but the fee would surely be beyond Jose Mourinho.
A talented player on course to become a star, Barella would be some addition for either side – but it just seems unlikely he will join either, with this smacking of an agent capitalising on Barella’s name being in the headlines after his goal against Juve.
