Tim Spiers has claimed in The Athletic that Wolverhampton Wanderers wanted to sign Ruben Dias before he went to Manchester City.

The Wolves reporter for The Athletic, who is well respected and well known, has claimed that Wolves did not want to pay the £50 million transfer fee that Benfica were looking for Dias 18 months ago.

As reported by Sky Sports in September 2020, City paid Benfica an initial transfer fee of £62 million to secure the services of the central defender.

Spiers has also reported in The Athletic today that Wolves plan to sign a central defender in the January transfer window.

The journalist wrote in The Athletic: “They’ve looked at spending big money on a top-class centre-back before… 18 months ago, Ruben Dias, now of Manchester City, was a target they discussed, but were put off by Benfica’s £50 million asking price. From what I’m told, they’ll make this position a priority in the summer.”

Defensively disappointing

Wolves are not having the best of seasons, and there are problems defensively.

Nuno’s side conceded as many as three goals to West Bromwich Albion at home in the Premier League this past weekend.

The Wanderers have shipped in as many as 29 goals in 19 Premier League games so far this season, and that is a big reason why they are now 12 points off the Champions League spots.

Wolves need to get better at the back if they are to challenge for the top four this season.
