Speaking on the Que Golazo Podcast, Fabrizio Romano has given an update on Tottenham’s reported interest in Marcel Sabitzer.

Tottenham have been linked with a move for the Austrian midfielder for quite some time now, and Romano says that the London club are keen to sign him.

However, it isn’t as straightforward as that, Leipzig aren’t willing to sell Sabitzer this month, so it seems as though this is a move that will need pursuing in the summer.

“In January I think no, because the idea of Leipzig on Upamecano is also the same with Sabitzer, they don’t want to lose any top player in January and they will decide next summer what they do with Sabitzer as they will with Upamecano,” Romano said.

“But Upamecano has a release clause so it’s different, clubs don’t need to negotiate with Leipzig, with Sabitzer yes, just because there is no clause.

“At the moment, the club is ready to talk next summer about the situation of Sabitzer. You mentioned Tottenham and it’s true, just because he’s a blooded player and also because he’s a fighter, he has quality but he’s a fighter, so he would be perfect for Jose Mourinho.”

Romano is of course one of the most well-connected journalists in Europe, so this update is certainly interesting.

Spurs may end up getting Sabitzer, but it doesn’t seem as though he’s going to be joining this month, which is rather unfortunate.

Mourinho reportedly wants a new box to box midfielder through the door this month, so whether or not this update scuppers those plans remains to be seen.

Either way, this is a situation that is certainly worth keeping an eye on in the coming months.
