According to ESPN, Tottenham Hotspur have now registered their interest in signing Manchester United playmaker Jesse Lingard.
It’s claimed that Lingard is ‘desperate’ to leave United and play first-team football elsewhere, but United have activated a one-year option on his contract.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reluctant to let him go, but seven clubs have now registered their interest in luring Lingard away from Old Trafford.
Premier League sides, Sheffield United, Spurs and West Ham United are all keen, as are Inter Milan, Marseille, Nice and Porto.
United have yet to decide on whether Lingard is actually available, but the rumours of a move to Tottenham seems truly bizarre.
Lingard worked under Jose Mourinho at United, notching 20 goals and 11 assists in 107 games under the Portuguese boss, and maybe their relationship was strong enough for Mourinho to pursue a reunion.
Lingard has only played three games this season though, and wouldn’t really bolster Tottenham’s current options having gradually slipped out of contention at United.
Dele Alli can’t get a kick at the moment, and allowing him to walk away then bringing in the 28-year-old Lingard would surely cause anger for some Spurs fans.
Whether United would even consider selling to a direct rival remains to be seen, but Lingard seems like a truly bizarre target for Mourinho and Spurs right now.
