Liverpool star Jordan Henderson has told Sky Sports that he and his teammates were not happy at the timing of the half-time whistle against Manchester United.

The Reds played out a goalless draw with United at Anfield in the Premier League on Sunday evening.

Towards the end of the first half, Sadio Mane appeared set for a through ball, but referee Paul Tierney decided to blow the whistle.

The whistle appeared to blow six seconds before the allotted one minute of injury time, as reported by The London Evening Standard.

It seemed to be a very good chance for Liverpool, and club captain and midfielder Henderson, who actually played in defence against the Red Devils, admitted after the match he and his teammates were not happy.

The England international midfielder – who has been on the books of the Reds since the summer of 2011 when he joined from Sunderland for a transfer fee reported by The Guardian to be worth £20 million – has suggested that he could not believe that the referee decided to blow the whistle when he did.

Henderson told Sky Sports: “We weren’t happy about that, as you can imagine. Strange, very strange. I think he’s through on goal. I don’t know, I don’t know. We were frustrated at half time, but still plenty of time for us to score a goal.”

Title race

The draw with United means that the Premier League title race remains wide open.

Liverpool are now fourth with 34 points from 18 matches, three points behind leaders Manchester United.

Manchester City are second with 35 points from 17 games, while Leicester currently find themselves third in the standings with 35 points from 18 games.
