Reported Leicester City and Southampton target Mattias Svanberg is a player ‘like few others’, legendary Italy international Alessandro Costacurta told Sky Italia, translated by Calciomercato.

With AC Milan opting instead to snap up Soualiho Meite, signing the Torino prowler on loan with an option to buy, the seven-time European champions appear to have simultaneously backed out of the race for a four-time Sweden international highly admired by the one-and-only Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Not that there is a shortage of rival clubs taking a keen interest in the 22-year-old Svanberg.

Gianluca di Marzio claims that Leicester and Southampton have been watching the 6ft 1ins Swede closely during an impressive breakthrough season in Serie A.

And Costacurta, who played with Gennaro Gattuso, Andrea Pirlo, Ruud Gullit and more during 19 trophy-laden years at the San Siro, sees something special in young Svanberg.

“He is a guy who can see vertically like few others,” said the five-time Champions League winner.

“There are few players with these characteristics around. He also has character, professionalism and awareness. I like him a lot and I am not surprised that Milan have set their sights on him.”

Rumoured interest from Leicester and Southampton is hardly a shock either.

The Foxes and the Saints have an enviable track record when it comes to unearthing exciting young talents, from James Maddison to Che Adams, Wesley Fofana to Ibrahima Diallo.
