Aston Villa only stayed in the Premier League on the final day of last season, but they won’t have any of those fears this time around.
Dean Smith’s side have impressed this season, and they may even have hopes of breaking into the European places this season.
They’re now being linked with an exciting move; the Daily Mail report that Villa are in talks to sign Marseille midfielder Morgan Sanson this month.
A creative midfield player who can play box-to-box or in a holding role if needed, Sanson would be quite the coup for Villa if they can pull off a deal.
It’s hard to imagine where Sanson would fit into Villa’s strongest midfield, as Douglas Luiz, John McGinn and Ross Barkley have been superb this season.
Barkley is only on loan for Chelsea, but there are now fears among Villa fans that a deal for Sanson is actually preparation for Douglas Luiz leaving the club.
The Brazilian ace has controlled games from a holding midfield role this season, and Manchester City have a buy-back clause on him that expires later this year.
With Fernandinho out of contract and potentially leaving, Luiz could be seen as his compatriot’s heir – and there wouldn’t be anything that Villa can do about it.
Villa fans have been taking to Twitter to suggest that a deal for Sanson is ‘forward planning’ for Luiz leaving the club, and whilst they hope they’re wrong, there’s a real fear that Sanson is ‘unfortunately’ being lined up to replace Luiz.
