Are David Tennant and Michael Sheen friends? The Staged stars returned in 2021 for season 2, so let’s consider their friendship.

A number of lockdown-inspired TV and film projects have emerged over the course of 2020 and into 2021.

Some would argue that Staged is one of the better offerings set during the COVID-19 pandemic, using video-conferencing tech to humorous effect.

Written and directed by Simon Evans, season 1 premiered in June 2020 and saw David Tennant and Michael Sheen play fictionalised versions of themselves, rehearsing for a performance of Luigi Pirandello’s Six Characters in Search of an Author over a videoconference.

It was then renewed and season 2 arrived in January 2021, but a number of viewers are curious as to whether the stars are actually friends in real life.

Are David Tennant and Michael Sheen friends?

  • Yes, David Tennant and Michael Sheen are friends in real life. However, you may be surprised to hear that their friendship is quite recent…

As highlighted by, the 51-year-old Welsh performer (Michael) and 49-year-old Scottish actor (David) hadn’t performed together before they starred in the 2019 TV series Good Omens.

The pair spoke with The Times and reflected on the promotional phase of the fantasy miniseries, with Michael explaining: “That period was longer than anything I’ve done before in my life. That’s when David and I really got to know each other.”

David agreed, adding: “Yes, yes, that’s true. There were a lot of dinners in hotels all over the world.”

Answering whether it all helped to create Staged, David said: “Yes, I think it’s allowed us to know each other enough to take the piss out of each other.”

How did Staged begin?

Writer-director Simon Evans and co-creator Phin Glynn pitched the idea of the series to David, as he had worked with Phin beforehand.

After seeing David and Michael on-screen together in Good Omens, Simon and Phin hoped that David would suggest Michael as the other half of the duo, and of course, he did.

Many have drawn parallels between Staged and The Trip starring Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, which coincidentally, Michael caught up with when lockdown began:

In the aforementioned interview, David acknowledged the series: “I think The Trip is one of the things that was mentioned as a sort of touchstone of what’s possible. The idea that two people just talking s**t can be entertaining… we can only aspire to be as entertaining as Steve and Rob, and we have our own plot, our own structure, but it’s true, it’s also about two people passing the time, isn’t it?”

Weighing in, Michael said: “Yeah, and I suppose it gives you a context to think about how you can play a different version of yourself. How you can take risks in terms of what people might think you are like. Because I don’t think Steve or Rob are actually like that. There’s bits of Steve and Rob in there, definitely, but I know they are not actually like that. And so that did help…”

Is Staged season 3 confirmed?

Staged is yet to be renewed for a third season.

It’s uncertain whether the series will return to screens at some point, but it’s not worth ruling out entirely.
