Paul Merson suggested on Sky Sports News (1:30pm, January 16, 2021) that Tottenham Hotspur central defender Eric Dier would not want to face Billy Sharp on Saturday afternoon.
Tottenham will take on Sheffield United away from home at Bramall Lane in the Premier League today.
Dier, who can also operate as a midfielder, is likely to start in defence for Spurs, while former Leeds United striker Sharp could lead the line for the Blades.
Former Arsenal star Merson, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, believes that Dier would not want Sharp to start today, and that it could be hard for the 26-year-old if he does.
Merson said on Sky Sports News (1:30pm, January 16, 2021): “If I am Dier today, I don’t want to be playing against Billy Sharp. If I am Dier, I don’t because I know because he is going to be around me, he is going to be around my feet. It is going to be a hard day’s work.”
Nothing to fear
Sharp is a pure goalscorer, but he is 34 years of age now and is not guaranteed a place in the United starting lineup.
The former Southampton striker has scored two goals in 221 minutes in the Premier League so far this season, according to WhoScored.
Dier has grown into a very good central defender, and the England international would not fear but relish the challenge of facing Sharp.
Tottenham are challenging for the Premier League title this season, while the Blades are in danger of getting relegated to the Championship.
