Well, Plymouth Argyle fans knew this day was coming.

It is only a matter of time before Luke Jephcott becomes a gossip column ever-present, with Nottingham Forest the first of presumably numerous Championship clubs who will be linked with the League One hotshot over the next few weeks.

According to The Athletic, Forest have been watching the 20-year-old Welshman closely during a superb breakthough season on the South Coast.

So far, Jephcott has scored 12 goals in 17 games.

When you consider that Forest trio Lyle Taylor, Lewis Grabban and Miguel Angel Guerrero have found the net six times between them in 2020/21, it is no real surprise that Jephcott has admirers at the City Ground.

The Welshman is a no-nonsense, natural-born finisher. One touch; bang.

“Luke doesn’t complicate things, a bit like Harry Kane if you like,” his former Pilgrims coach Sean McCarthy told Plymouth Live recently.

“I know there are a number of bigger clubs watching him and he can certainly play Championship.”

It reports are to be believed, Jephcott may be handed the chance to prove McCarthy right sooner rather than later.

That is not to say, however, that Nottingham Forest will have it all their own way. This is a dyed-in-the-wool Plymouth boy we are talking about. Cut him and he bleeds green.

With the Pilgrims hovering nervously above the relegation zone, don’t be surprised if Jephcott is focused not on a mid-season transfer but firing his boyhood club to safety.
