Liverpool fans have been left frustrated with the club’s recruitment staff, after reports they have turned down a chance to sign David Alaba.

The Independent says that Alaba was of interest to Liverpool, but the club opted against making a move for the Austrian as they feel he is ‘too small’.

Liverpool want their centre backs to be aerially dominant, and that is not a big strength in Alaba’s game.

The Reds have now moved on to looking at other targets.

But many Liverpool fans feel that they have made a mistake by overlooking Alaba, especially as they desperately need a central defender right now.

Liverpool fans may have found the news easier to take had they been solid at the back this term.

However, with injuries stacking up, Klopp’s side have struggled to cope defensively.

Alaba would surely add an immediate injection of quality at Liverpool if he was to arrive, but it seems that the Reds aren’t prepared to look for a short term fix.

As a result it could be that Nathaniel Phillips or Rhys Williams have to play a key role between now and the end of the season, as Liverpool look to retain their Premier League crown.
