The Pembrokeshire Murders on ITV

The Pembrokeshire Murders began on ITV at 9pm on January 11th, 2021.

The series, which is to be shown over three consecutive nights, tells the story of serial killer John Cooper and the police investigation that put him behind bars.

The case of John Cooper is particularly chilling as the serial killer appeared on the popular game show Bullseye around one month before committing a double murder on the renowned coastal path that runs through Pembrokeshire.

What happened to John Cooper?

When we’re introduced to John Cooper in episode 1 of The Pembrokeshire Murders, he is already serving time in prison.

In 1998, he was sentenced to 16 years in prison for 30 counts of robbery and burglary.

In 2006, the murders of Richard and Helen Thomas in 1985, as well as Peter and Gwenda Dixon in 1989, became the subject of Operation Ottawa, an investigation aimed at bringing the perpetrator to justice.

Thanks to advances in DNA forensics and a chance appearance on the game show Bullseye led to Cooper being linked with the case.

In December 2008, Cooper was released from prison after serving 10 years of his original sentence but he was re-arrested within a matter of months in connection with the aforementioned murders.

On May 26th, 2011, John Cooper was sentenced to life imprisonment for the four murders and in 2012 had an appeal against the sentencing rejected.

What prison is John Cooper in?

  • John Cooper, who is now 76, is being held in an undisclosed prison.

According to The Sun, the location of John Cooper’s whereabouts has not been revealed.

In The Pembrokeshire Murders, it is stated that John Cooper was being held at Dyffryn Prison but no such facility exists today and is likely a fictional location.

The Pembrokeshire Murders concludes on January 13th while the series will be available to stream on ITV Hub.
