Nintendo has delivered fans their first good look at the upcoming Bowser’s Fury, and already the internet is buzzing with speculation about what has been dubbed “God Slayer Bowser” and a new giant version of Cat Mario.

Fans are praising the game’s darker tone, as well as its expansive level. What’s really grabbed attention, though, is the sight of Mario and Bowser fighting.

One moment in the trailer shows Cat Mario growing to an enormous size with glowing yellow hair, which many have pointed out looks similar to Super Saiyans in the Dragon Ball series – as well as Super Sonic from the Sonic the Hedgehog games.

What is Bowser’s Fury?

Bowser’s Fury is a bonus game included with Super Mario 3D World on the Nintendo Switch. The original 3D world debuted in 2013 on the Nintendo Wii U, so Bowser’s Fury is an incentive for dedicated Nintendo fans to purchase the game again on the Switch.

The trailer shows Cat Mario exploring a land ravaged by an overpowered and “out of control” Bowser which fans have dubbed “God Slayer Bowser” – in order to defeat Bowser, Mario is teaming up with Bowser Jr, in an unexpected twist on the usual dynamic between these three characters.

Bowser’s Fury will release on February 12 on the Nintendo Switch, bundled with Super Mario 3D World. It’s not yet known how large this new game will be, and whether the single level shown in the trailer is the entirety of the game.

What is God Slayer Bowser?

God Slayer Bowser is the name given to the large, “out of control” Bowser as seen in the Bowser’s Fury trailer. It appears that Bowser has become supercharged with power, and poses a threat to himself and others – hence why Bowser Jr is teaming up with Cat Mario in this game.

It’s believed that the name “God Slayer Bowser” has been invented by fans, and while many purport that this is the new version’s official name in Japan, there are no sources at present which confirm this. In English, this larger Bowser is simply called Fury Bowser.

For the moment, there’s still a lot that fans don’t know about Bowser’s Fury, but Nintendo will no doubt share more information as the game reaches its release date of February 12.
