Allan McGregor has long been a favourite of the Rangers fans, and in recent weeks he’s become even more popular.

It was the 38-year-old’s stunning stop from Leigh Griffiths that kept the scores level at Ibrox as Celtic put Rangers under the cosh earlier this month, with the home side going on to win 1-0.

His performance in that crucial derby win saw comparisons drawn with Andy Goram, widely regarded as the club’s greatest ever keeper.

He was on form once again on Sunday as Rangers extended their lead at the top of the table to 22 points with a 2-1 win over Aberdeen at Pittodrie.

It wasn’t his performance between the sticks, however, that made the biggest impression.

Already down to 10 men, Aberdeen could have been reduced to nine in the first half when Dons striker Curtis Main challenged Rangers left-back Borna Barisic with studs up.

Referee John Beaton opted to show a yellow card, and manager Derek McInnes took the player off shortly after.

Former Rangers strikers Ally McCoist and Kris Boyd both insisted on Sky Sports that a red should have been shown, and in footage that has gone viral it appears McGregor was of the same opinion.

A clip of McGregor’s reaction uploaded by @NewcoTed on Monday morning had amassed over 5,000 likes within seven hours of being posted.

As Beaton brandishes the yellow, McGregor can be heard saying: “Oh my f***in’ God that’s incredible by the way.

“Lino, Lino! Is that not endangering the safety of an opponent, lunging in?

“How many boxes do you need to tick John?

“That’s unbelievable. F***ing joke.

‘Three games I got for winning a f***ing ball.”

Sunday’s match was McGregor’s 402nd appearance for the club.
