Popular YouTuber Jenna Marbles was ‘cancelled’ by her fans earlier this year so she made an emotional apology video and quit YouTube, but now fans want her to return.
Jenna Marbles was loved by her fans ever since she started her YouTube channel back in 2010. Her comedic and lighthearted content was popular for years, quickly becoming one of the most subscribed YouTubers in the world.
But Jenna was put under fire earlier this year when people began to uncover many ‘offensive’ things she has done in her past videos. Many of the videos had been taken down by Jenna a long time ago, but this didn’t stop people from trying to ‘cancel’ her.
As a result, Jenna Marbles uploaded a heart-wrenching video to her YouTube channel in which she apologised for many different things that people had been ‘cancelling’ her for, as well as making a very serious announcement.
So why exactly were people ‘cancelling’ Jenna Marbles?
Who is Jenna Marbles?
Jenna Nicole Mourey, better known online as Jenna Marbles is an internet sensation, known for her popular YouTube channel.
The 33-year-old from New York has over 20 million subscribers, the eighth most popular channel in the world that is operated by a woman.
Jenna just announced that she was quitting YouTube
Jenna posted a video onto her YouTube channel in June titled “a message” which has gained almost three million views in the first ten hours.
In the video, she apologised for many things that she has done in the past, and addresses the fact that she has grown a lot as a person.
Then, she said: “For now, I just can’t exist on this channel. I’ve taken down anything that would upset someone. And I hope you know that’s just not my intention. It’s never what I set out to do, to hurt anyone’s feelings or to make anyone feel bad.”
She continued to say: “I’m going to move on from this channel for now. I don’t know if that’s forever. I don’t know how long it’s gonna be. I just want to make sure that the things I’ve put into the world are not hurting anyone.”
She then thanked her fans for all their support and explains how painful it is to have to do this.
Why was Jenna Marbles ‘cancelled’?
Many fans ‘cancelled’ Jenna for a variety of different things she has done in the past, many of which she addressed in her video.
First, Jenna put many of her old YouTube videos on private so they are no longer viewable to the public. She apologised if any of those videos hold “nostalgia” for her fans, but argues that she doesn’t want to “put any negativity into the world” including any “content that will offend anyone”.
Many fans ‘cancelled’ Jenna due to an old video made in 2011 where people argue that she is doing blackface. However, the video is actually a mockery of Nicki Minaj, with the blackface being entirely unintentional and supposed to be a joke. But she still apologised for the video which she claimed has been “private for a long time” and has caused significant offence.
In another 2011 video, Jenna was cancelled for saying “hey ching chong wing wong”, which many people are taking as a racist slur against people of Chinese origin. Jenna said: “It’s awful. It doesn’t need to exist. It’s inexcusable. I’m incredibly sorry if this offended you. It should never have existed.”
She then apologised for a 2012 video where she was essentially “slut-shaming”. She acknowledged her “internal misogyny” and argued that the video “does not reflect her attitudes towards anyone”, before claiming that she feels really bad and it has been “eating her up for a long time”.
