Jamie Carragher thinks Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips’ confidence has been knocked after Jordan Henderson played at centre-back against Southampton, as he told Monday Night Football on Sky Sports.
Liverpool suffered a 1-0 defeat to the Saints and Carragher now feels both the academy boys are ‘not going be feeling great’.
Phillips did play at the back for Liverpool during their goalless draw at Newcastle, alongside Fabinho who has been a regular in that position ever since Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez were out for the long-term.
Carragher commented on how Liverpool’s youngsters will be feeling, whilst firing a warning that another centre-back needs to be signed up this month.
“I think number one it’s imperative Liverpool sign someone in January,” said Carragher. “That’s obvious. I am not saying anything different.
“But I think the fact they they played Jordan Henderson at centre-back, it’s not going to do a lot for the two lads [Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips] confidence-wise.
“So, if he goes back to them how do they feel if there are two midfield players playing there? That tells me they are not going to be feeling great if they go back in. Jordan Henderson isn’t a centre-back.”

Even though Liverpool have the power to purchase near-on any centre-back they wish, it’s still going to be very difficult to buy the player they want.
The selling club will be well aware that Liverpool are in need of a centre-back and will inflate the price of their player’s services when the champions of England talk about a potential fee.
So, those in the Liverpool boardroom, who have a pretty strong record in the market under Klopp’s stewardship, will have to eek out every bit of their talents in order to buy the right player at the right price this month.
