Darren Bent has claimed that Ivan Toney is even more clinical than Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins, as per his comments on Sky Sports.
Toney was brought in as Watkins’s replacement at Brentford, after Villa went out and signed the 25-year-old.
The former Peterborough striker has made a blistering start at Brentford, after scoring 16 goals in his first 22 Championship matches.
And Bent actually feels that Toney is actually a better finisher than Villa’s Watkins.
“I like him, I really like him,” said Bent. “His movement is absolutely superb. Senses where the danger is going to be and gets himself in there.
“He’s good in the air and he has two good feet. But where I think he excels to a Ollie Watkins and a Maupay is that I think he’s more clinical. In and around that box with his finishing. I think he’s more cultured to his finishing.
“He has got more to his game and there are different types of finishes. Whereas Watkins is a very, very good player and he might say that he’s a little bit better than him allround. But in and around the goal if I give them both an opportunity to score a goal then I fancy Ivan Toney.”
Villa could have signed Toney for almost a third of the price that they landed Watkins for, if they had moved for him last summer, but they are unlikely to have too many regrets.
Watkins has still made a promising start at Villa, although he is currently going through a goal drought.
Watkins has drawn a blank in his last eight Premier League appearances for Dean Smith’s side, but his link play still makes him a key player for the claret and blues.
Villa are next in action on Friday evening, when they take on Liverpool in the FA Cup.
