Speaking on the Ornstein & Chapman Podcast, David Ornstein has shared what he knows about Georginio Wijnaldum’s current contract situation at Liverpool.

The Dutch midfielder’s contract is up this summer, and it seems as though he could be on his way out of Anfield at the end of the season.

Despite the fact the ex-Newcastle star is now allowed to negotiate with other clubs to agree a pre-contract agreement, it seems as though Liverpool aren’t accelerating their efforts to keep Wijnaldum.

“As far as I know, the negotiations are not ongoing at the moment, but that can change at any moment,” Ornstein said.

“But it underlines what Adam was saying there, I don’t think Liverpool will change their stance much, they’ll probably wait to see how the landscape looks from a Barcelona perspective, he’s also been linked with Inter Milan, but they’ve got to sort out their own problem with Christian Eriksen before looking at a potential move for Wijnaldum.

“There’s no animosity at Liverpool, so he continues playing there.”

Liverpool are certainly playing a dangerous game here.

Wijnaldum is an important player for Jurgen Klopp, the fact that he’s started 15 Premier League games this season proves that, so to risk him leaving on a free is would appear to be unwise.

The 30-year-old is now able to negotiate with either Barcelona or Inter with a view to joining them in the summer, and if Liverpool don’t start talks soon, they could end up being beaten to the punch by either of these two European giants.

As Ornstein says, this situation could change at any moment, so it’s worth keeping an eye on this in the coming weeks, especially after reports claiming Wijnaldum wants to stay emerged last week.
