Liverpool FC fans mourn the death of Gerry Marsden, the voice behind the club’s anthem, as he passed away on January 3rd. He is survived by his wife and two daughters but not much is known about them, so here’s all we know.
The death of Gerry and the Pacemakers frontman was announced by his family on Sunday 3rd January. He is survived by his wife Pauline and his two daughters, Yvette and Victoria.
He passed away at age 78 from a short illness, reported to be a blood infection, in Arrowe Park in Merseyside.
Who was Gerry Marsden?
As well as being the voice behind Liverpool FC’s anthem ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, Gerry was known to be the lead singer of Liverpudlian beat band Gerry and the Pacemakers.
They rose to prominence soon after their formation in 1959, rivalling The Beatles in their early days. They went on to set the record of being the first act to reach number one in the UK Singles Chart with their first three single releases: “How Do You Do It?”, “I Like It” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone”.
As well as his music career, he was notably known for his charity work for the Hillsborough Disaster in April 1989, where 98 Liverpool fans were killed due to overcrowding. He was awarded an MBE for his charity work, such as re-releasing his hit ‘Ferry Cross the Mersey’ for the cause.
Even up until his death, his charity work continued with the new version of the Liverpool anthem, to celebrate the work of the NHS during the pandemic.
Who is Pauline Marsden?
Pauline Behan was born in Liverpool to Mr and Mrs Gerry Behan. Living in Hunts Cross, Liverpool, she worked as a secretary at the Co-operative Building Society.
Before meeting his future husband, she was a huge fan of jazz and rock ‘n’ roll, especially after seeing The Beatles.
She reportedly had her eyes set on John Lennon before dating George Harrison.
Relationship with Pauline Marsden
Gerry met his future wife in a bar in Liverpool in 1959. At the time, Pauline was dating The Beatles guitarist, George Harrison.
Since George was frequently away, she spent a lot of time with Gerry and was eventually forced to choose between the two.
After splitting with George, Pauline and Gerry got engaged in 1964 and married on 11th October 1965 at St Mary’s Church, Woolton in Liverpool. When they got engaged, the news was kept secret as Gerry’s manager, Brian Epstein, believed it would negatively affect his career.
The couple had their first daughter Yvette on October 30th1966 and welcomed second child Victoria sometime between 1980-1981.
