Paul Merson told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports (02/01/21 at 2:45 pm) that Liverpool academy product Curtis Jones has been ‘phenomenal’.
The 19-year-old has seen his game time increased in recent months, with injuries hitting Jurgen Klopp’s men hard, and as a result, it opening that starting door for him.
Despite Liverpool have to deal with those injury problems, mainly across their backline, Jones has thrived in the middle of the park.
And Merson touched upon his performances and how he has taken the game by the ‘scruff of the neck’.
“We have seen Jones come in who has been phenomenal,” said Merson. “He has taken it by the scruff.
“Not just come in and sat on the edge of the game and thought ‘I will just get by and I don’t want to make a mistake’.
“He’s taken the game by the scruff of the neck.”
Game by game, Jones, who has 17 PL games to his name thus far, is becoming a key player for Liverpool, but with the return of Thiago Alcantara, he may find that he will lose his place in the starting XI.
There is no shame in losing your starting place to a player like Thiago, who has looked ridiculously good during his brief periods on the pitch.
Ahead of Liverpool’s clash against Southampton on Monday night, it remains to be seen whether Klopp would start him given that he is still building up his fitness.
